Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned, so the saying goes; but with modern day technology, revenge, using social media is sweeter and more powerful then all. Dave Caroll and many other individuals are living proof to the powerful tool of social mediums such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Squidoo etc.

Dave, who has his own band (Sons of Maxwell), invested a lot of money in his equipment which included a Taylor guitar. While sitting in the airplane, Dave’s attention was drawn to the United airline workers who was loading the luggage. The manner of property abuse was crystal clear and Dave suspected that his guitar was damaged.
When arriving at his destination, his suspicion was confirmed when he collected the luggage, and an official complaint was lodged. For more than a year Dave struggle to get the airline to admit to negligent behavior and to replace his guitar. In response, Dave decided to express his frustration, and composed a song about the whole affair, which was then posted onto YouTube.

This form of protest was highly successful; perhaps also due to his creativity and great voice, and has already been viewed by more than 9 million individuals. In retrospect, I am sure United airline’s management wished that they had sorted this out in a more professional manner. The amount of bad publicity had placed them under the spotlight and now millions of viewers, globally, associated United airlines with poor service, and an airline which has no respect for private property.

The evolution of the Internet and the World Wide Web had changed the way people communicate. Social media applications such as YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Squidoo etc. had become billion-dollar industries; with people communicating more via electronic media with instant messages, sms’s, and e-mail, rather than the use of verbal communication over the telephone.
The world indeed has become a smaller place due to social media applications. When you look at applications such as YouTube, Facebook or Twitter, one can understand why it is so popular. It can be accessed from anywhere in the world by only using a cell phone or a PC. You can access profiles no matter what time of day, and in the privacy of your own home. With applications such as Facebook and Twitter, one can access photos and information of individuals without having to have spoken a single word.

Social media isn’t just a tool for tweeting and social networking; it has far bigger benefits to it. The amount of free information on the internet has provided answers to millions of individuals with access to it. YouTube allow individuals to watch video clips on almost any topic; from showing how to clean you specific weapon to, as in our example with Dave, providing ways for people to express themselves.

Social media allows for new business opportunities where revenue can be generated via advertising and internet marketing. It is one of the greatest ‘new’ developments of our era and should be exploited.
